Evaluating Efficacy of Selected Fungicides on Controlling Jack-O-Lantern Pumpkin Diseases, Champaign, IL

M. Babadoost and M. Hurt Department of Crop Sciences, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

In 2003, a field trial is being conducted at the University of Illinois Vegetable Research Farm at Champaign, IL, to evaluate the efficacy of selected fungicides on controlling diseases of jack-o-lantern pumpkin.

The soil is a silt clay loam (Drumer) with pH 6.5. Soil was deep-tilled in the fall of 2002 after corn was harvested and disked before seeding. Fertilizers, 115 lb nitrogen, 101 lb phosphorous, and 120 lb potassium per acre, were broadcast and incorporated into the soil on 26 March. Roundup herbicide (2 pt/A) was applied on 8 May. Jack-o-lantern pumpkin cultivar Howden seeds were planted on 16 June. Seeds were sown 18 inch apart in single-row plots, 20 ft long. The plots were spaced 40 ft apart in a completely randomized block design with four replications. Furadan insecticide (2 pt/A) was broadcast over planted rows on 17 June and the plots were sprayed with capture insecticide (4 oz/A) on 22 July and with Pounce (4 oz/A) on 1 August. Herbicide Strategy (4 pt/A), in 20 gal of water/A, was applied over entire field on 17 June. Also, the field was sprayed with herbicide Poast Plus (2.25 pt A), for controlling grasses, and Permit (1 oz/A), for controlling broadleaf weeds, on 14 July.  In addition, during the season, weeds are controlled by cultivation and hand weeding. Cucumber beetles and other insects are managed by applying Capture (4 fl oz/A), using 20 gal of water, per acre.

Twelve fungicides, Acrobat 50WP, AgriFos-400, BASF-516 WG , Bravo Ultrex 82.5WG, Cabrio 20EG, Cuprofix Disperss, Cuprofix-concentrated, Flint 50WG, Nova 40W, Phostrol, Procure 50WS, and Quadris 2.08SC (Table 2), in 15 different combinations (treatments) (Tables 1 & 3), are spray applied onto plants. Application of fungicides began on 21 July and will continue (at 7-day intervals) until 22 September. Fungicides are applied with a backpack sprayer using 50 gal of water per acre.  Disease incidence (percentage of foliage or fruit affected) and disease severity (percentage of total area of vines, leaves, or fruit infected) are visually evaluated weekly from 22 August to 30 September. Disease incidence and severity are assessed at four locations (43 sq ft each) in each plot, and at the same locations, throughout the season (a total of seven). Area under disease progress curve (AUDPC) for each treatment will be calculated by plotting mean disease severity of the seven evaluations. Fruit number and weight in each plot will be determined around 7 October. Major diseases of jack-o-lantern pumpkins in this area are powdery mildew, downy mildew, Plectosporium blight, Fusarium wilt and fruit rot, gummy stem blight and black rot, Sclerotinia rot, bacterial wilt, bacterial leaf spot and fruit rot, and virus diseases.
