Vegetable Crops News:

Cucurbits angular leaf spot. Angular leaf spot, caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae, was observed in cucumber field on July 10. This pathogen infects leaves, stems, and fruit. For information on angular leaf spot, click here.

Fruit Crops News:

Grape black rot and downy mildew. Black rot and downy mildew were observed in three vineyards visited in southern Illinois. Fortunately, both diseases are under control. These diseases are very destructive in Illinois and could cause substantial yield losses. For information on black rot, click here, and on downy mildew, click here.

Apple fire blight. This year, fire blight can be found in most of the apple orchards in Illinois. The orchards received bactericide applications at silver tip and during bloom, have no or localized fire blight infection. But, severe fire blight has developed in the orchards that were either not sprayed or not sprayed on time. For information on fire blight, click here.

Apple scab. The fungus Venturia inaequalis causes apple and crabapple scab. Severe crabapple scab is currently present in the state. Also, scab has been observed in several apple orchards throughout the state. In more than 15 apple orchards visited, only in one orchard this disease was epidemic. Peach scab. Peach scab, caused by the fungus Cladosporium carpophilum, has been observed in several orchards in Illinois. However, in most of the orchards, this disease is well under control. For information on peach scab, click here.
