Fire Blight of Apples and Pears. Fire blight is the most important disease of apples and pears in Illinois. In order to effectively manage this disease, a combination of measures should be practices. Pruning, dormant spray of copper, antibiotic application during bloom (particularly using MARYBLIT program), managing shoot blight, and planting resistant cultivars are some of the practices for reducing the incidence of fire blight in the orchards.
