A two-day Illinois
Summer Horticulture Day is set for Friday, June 27, and Saturday, June 28, near
Barry, in Pike County. This meeting is co-organized and co-sponsored by the
Illinois Grape and Wine Resources Council, Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners
Association, Illinois State Horticulture Society, Southern Illinois University,
University of Illinois, and the Illinois Department of Agriculture. The field
day will focus on marketing, up and coming varieties, weed and pest control and
horticulture crop producers.
Friday's program begins
at 2 p.m. and includes a tour to Bellview Vineyard, Pea Ridge Elk Farm and
Collver's Family Winery, dinner and presentations on Illinois horticultural crops,
industry needs and cider contest results. Friday registration is $25 with
limited seating on a first-come, first-served basis.
Saturday's program starts at 8 a.m. and includes agritourism, senior
farmers market nutrition program, variety updates, weed and pest updates,
vineyard practices, exhibitors, vineyard and winery tour and lunch featuring
Illinois Wine. Advance registration is $30, $25 for additional guests; $40
and $35 at the door.
