Downy mildew, caused by Plasmopara viticola,
is one of the major diseases of grapes in Illinois. Yield losses due
to rotting inflorescence and clusters and premature vine defoliation
occur throughout the state. The premature defoliation is a serious problem
because it not only affects the current season=s crop, it may also affect
the next season's crop by retarding cane maturation, decreasing the
amount of stored food reserved in the vine, and predisposing the vine
