Downy Mildew of Grape

Downy mildew, caused by Plasmopara viticola, is one of the major diseases of grapes in Illinois. Yield losses due to rotting inflorescence and clusters and premature vine defoliation occur throughout the state. The premature defoliation is a serious problem because it not only affects the current season's crop, it may also affect the next season's crop by retarding cane maturation, decreasing the amount of stored food reserved in the vine, and predisposing the vine to winter injury. It may take a vineyard several years to fully recover after severe winter injury.
