I. Phytophthora Blight of Cucurbits and Peppers

Phytophthora blight, caused by Phytophthora capsici, has been observed in many cucurbit and pepper fields throughout Illinois. The disease can be devastating, occasionally resulting in nearly total yield loss. For more information on managing this disease, click here and here.

II. Early Blight of Tomato

Early blight of tomato, caused by the fungus Alternaria solani, occurs in Illinois every year. This disease can affect plants at any sage of development. All above ground parts are susceptible. Yield losses caused by this disease could be 100%. This year, severe early blight has been observed in many tomato fields. Fungicides Flint, Quadris, Amistar, Cabrio, Maneb, Brovo, Ziram, and Gavel are labeled for control f=of early blight of tomato. But, apparently strobilurins (e.i., Quadris, Cabrio, Flint) are not as effective as expected against early blight. Spray applications of Bravo plus a copper compound at a 5- to 7-day schedule should suppress development of early blight of tomato. For more information on this disease, and on other diseases of tomato, click here.
